So i just bought a few items off ebay… a new case (2×2… my next cue is going to be a jump/break cue)… the cuetec smart extension piece or whatever… some joint protectors… the bowtie shaper/scuffer tool… some stuff called “q-glide” … and this cue

its replacing a cheapy minnesota fats graphite cue i bought from walmart… i really like the cue i got from walmart… i like the feeling of graphite more than wood…
anyways… that new cuetec is going to be my regular playing cue… my question is… will it be a bad idea to get a black phenolic ferrule put on? id like the whole stick to be black… that would be raw…
or is the phenolic ferrules typically just for break/jump cues? im going to get a good medium moori tip put on, but im just wondering if i can have the black phenolic ferrule put on without it hurting my game…

That's interesting. I don't think I've ever heard of a phenolic ferrule that wasn't a one piece ferrule/tip combination. I have seen other types of separate black ferrules though, but mostly on jump cues. They were probably graphite as well. Anyway, I don't think it would be a bad idea getting a black ferrule as long as you stuck with a leather tip. I'm sure you'll be able to adjust to whatever performance differences there would be.
I think the only 2 things that are hardest to adjust to is the weight of a new cue if its different then the last one and a bad tip. If you are comfortable to the weight and have a good tip (I have a talisman, heard moori was good too, will try next) the ferrule should effect the play that much. Not enough you couldn't adjust. I shot wit a graphite from wal mart also for years until one fateful nite when I lost and broke it lol. I look back and didn't like them cuz they get too sticky. So I vowed to not get another. But man the new lucasi hybrid has had some real good reviews. I just ordered a dale perry custom on ebay with a 11.75 shaft. I can't wait to see how the english is with this almost snooker like shaft. Well good luck with everything and I think the black ferrule would make the whole stick look great overall and not effect your play at all even. Great choice.
Against my advice, a friend of mine bought a break cue to use as a playing cue with a phenolic tip/ferrule combo because he liked the feel of my J/B. After a short period of time, he decided he did not like the way his cue played with the phenolic tip (although he still likes mine, go figure) so he had the tip end cut off, left the ferrule on, and put a leather tip on it.
Anyway, it plays fine but has a somewhat weird feel to me. I don't know if you will like it or not, just go into it knowing that it might feel a little off, but the playability will be adequate. We all have different preferences though, so you might like the feel of it.
Just make sure you have a competent person installing the ferrule. Don't try doing it yourself.
Good luck and have fun.
The do make black ferrules. I'm not sure how the hit would be with a phenolic ferrule. Interesting that you prefer graphic to wood though. Each his own I guess.
